UN appoints Austria’s Volker Turk as human rights chief

United Nations: The United Nations General Assembly has appointed senior Austrian diplomat Volker Turk as the global body’s human rights chief.

His appointment comes at a time when the UN Human Rights Office is facing criticism for accusing China of persecution of Muslim minorities.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres named Turke as his top policy chief late Wednesday and the 193-member General Assembly on Thursday unanimously approved his appointment.

Turk will replace Michelle Bachelet of Chile as High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva.

Bachelet’s four-year term ended on August 31 and he issued a report on the detention of Uighurs and other Muslim minorities in China at the end of his term, which China has raised serious objections to.
