Modi recognized for speaking effectively on world stage: Cleverly

New York (US), Sep 22 (PTI) British Foreign Minister James Cleverly has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is recognized for speaking effectively on the world stage and the Russian leadership also respects India’s position on the global stage. Is.

Cleverly said Britain expects Russian President Vladimir Putin to listen to voices calling for peace in the midst of the Ukraine war.

Cleverly was responding to a question on the Russo-Ukraine war and Prime Minister Modi’s conversation with the Russian President.

“Today’s era is not of war,” Modi told Putin on the sidelines of the 22nd Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Samarkand, Uzbekistan last week.

Cleverly said in an interview to ‘PTI-Bhasha’, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is recognized for speaking effectively on the world stage. We know that the Russian leadership also respects India’s position on the global stage.

He said, “I think this step of Prime Minister Modi in the matter is welcome. We hope that President Vladimir Putin will take note of the voices that have been raised demanding peace and de-escalation. That’s why we welcome this step of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

He said that many lives have been destroyed in the Ukraine war.

Cleverly said on Wednesday on the sidelines of a high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly, “We have certainly seen many lives destroyed in the Ukraine war, the people of Ukraine as well as the citizens of Russia … which is very frightening.” .”

Cleverley is Britain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth and Development.

He said the threat of food insecurity and famine looming large on the people was greater than before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Cleverly said, “We have always made it clear that our sanctions do not affect exports of food items, they do not affect exports of fertilizers, exports of ammonia. However, even for those in the world who are already suffering from hunger, their situation has been made worse by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Cleverly said, “India is certainly an incredibly important and influential country on the world stage. I think our close partnership and working relationship with India is incredibly important at a time when there is so much turmoil going on in the world.

In the context of world leaders gathering at the UN Headquarters amid global unrest, humanitarian and geopolitical crisis, Cleverly said the UN is still relevant.

He said, “The world is changing very rapidly in many areas. It is important that international institutions adapt themselves to meet the changing challenges and circumstances. Multilateral fora like the United Nations will always be an important part of our relationship.

He said that bilateral relations are also very important.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session provides a ‘great opportunity’ to have bilateral meetings with their counterparts.

Cleverly, who arrived in New York for the UNGA session, also met External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar late Wednesday evening.

Earlier in the day, Cleverly said he was looking forward to meeting his Indian counterpart.

He had said, “Jaishankar knows us very well. He has worked with my predecessors. I look forward to discussing global issues, regional issues and our bilateral relations with him.”
