Biden supports permanent membership of India, Japan and Germany in Security Council

Washington, Sep 22 (PTI) US President Joe Biden has supported India, Japan and Germany to be made permanent members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). A senior official of the Biden administration gave this information.

The official, on the condition of anonymity, said on Wednesday that a lot of work is yet to be done in this direction. In response to a question, he said, “We used to believe this earlier also and still believe that India, Japan and Germany should be made permanent members of the Security Council.”

Earlier, President Biden in his address to the session of the United Nations General Assembly reiterated the need for reform of the Security Council.

Biden said he believes the time has come to make the organization more inclusive so that it can better meet the needs of today’s era.

He said members of the Security Council, including the United States, should defend the UN Charter and avoid vetoes.

Biden said that the veto should be done only in special or extreme circumstances, so that the credibility and effect of the council is maintained.

“This is why the United States insists on increasing the number of members, both permanent and non-permanent, in the Security Council,” he said. These include those countries whose demand for permanent membership has been supported by us for a long time.
